You are Somebody!

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:38

When I began down this path of spiritual growth a couple of years ago, I needed an outlet for my thoughts and worries. My pastor seemed like the most obvious person to tell me if I was doing everything right, so I started an email conversation with him that has carried on since then. Occasionally, I like to go back and read my thought processes and feelings as I grappled with feeling called to be more vocal in sharing what the Lord was doing in my life. The sent folder in my email is full of emails I’ve saved because they remind me of exactly what was going on in my life, and how I responded to it. I can laugh now, as I’ve gotten more and more comfortable sharing with my church family and the world at large just how good the Lord has been to me in my life. Looking back, I can’t tell you how many emails contain the words: “But, I’m not a good communicator.” I still don’t feel like I am. When I write, my grammar is atrocious. When I speak, I talk too fast and occasionally mumble. I can’t get my thoughts together before I say something. I often stumble around trying to get the absolutely correct words to express what the Lord has put on my heart. But, I continue… because the thought of not sharing His goodness is out of the question..

My complaint about not being a good communicator showed a lack of faith in the God who I felt drawing me to do more for Him. You see, God likes to use the weak. We humans would see no power in a naturally talented person using those talents… but take an person who steps out of their comfort zone in obedience to the Lord and is filled with an ability that is an obvious gifting from the Holy Spirit and people take notice. They see that person becoming different and many times it’s obvious that God is working. That’s what He wants. He wants others to see Him through us. If we lack faith or allow fear to keep us from following His lead, we rob Him of the glory He so richly deserves, and we fail to live the abundant life He has for us.

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

1 Corinthians 3:9

There’s a strange thing that happens, sometimes. We can see a need or sense a need, and yet, in our mind we can only get to: “Somebody should do something.” But, we seem incapable of making the connection that we could do it. Sometimes it’s because we don’t feel capable or worthy or even like it’s something we ‘should’ do. Sometimes, we justify our lack of action by listing the things we are already doing. But, none of that matters. If He is asking you to do more for Him, it doesn’t matter how many things you’re already doing, it doesn’t matter if you think you’re good at it or not, it only matters that you are obedient to His call. Perhaps the fact that you noticed the need means you should do something about it.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:58

Beloved, God calls us to make His glory known, not only in our lives, but in the lives of all we touch. He has a work for each of us, and He may just be calling you to do something that could change the lives of others. Listen carefully to the whispers of the Holy Spirit and obey. The blessings of a life walking closely and obediently with our Lord are so very much better than we can imagine.

The next time you see a need and think, “Somebody should do something!” Remember…

YOU are Somebody!
